Case Study

Case Study: PU Screed Update for Cold-Store Food Prep & Packaging Area

Empty white-walled utility room with a glossy green epoxy floor and wall-mounted electrical panels.

Client:  Regional, family-run, food wholesaler

Area: 40m² food preparation and packaging area

Environment: Cold, high-moisture, hygiene-critical

Issues

The existing floor coating was no longer fit for purpose in a cold-store, food prep environment – it was breaking up, cracks had appeared, and it was slippery, compromising both hygiene and safety standards.

Survey

Our site visit confirmed –

  • Extensive wear to the existing coating
  • Slippery, smooth surface creating safety risks
  • Localised breakage where moisture had penetrated
  • Need for a robust, hygienic, slip-resistant system suitable for a cold environment

Solution

To restore performance and safety, a 9mm polyurethane (PU) screed system was specified and installed.

Installation Process

  • Diamond-grind to the existing coating to remove weak surface and expose the substrate
  • Cut anchor chases to ensure mechanical bonding and long-term adhesion
  • Application of high performing primer, suitable for cold environments
  • Installation of 9mm PU screed, to provide a seamless, heavy-duty and slip-resistant finish

Outcome

The upgraded floor delivered immediate improvements in safety, hygiene and durability, providing the client with a surface designed to withstand thermal shock, heavy foot traffic and constant washdowns.

Benefits of a 9mm PU screed system

  • Exceptional durability for heavy-use food production areas
  • Slip-resistance even when wet
  • Thermal shock resistance, ideal for cold environments
  • Seamless and hygienic, preventing bacteria from accumulating
  • Chemical resistance to cleaning products and food by-products
  • Longevity, reducing future maintenance costs
  • Easy to clean, supporting strict hygiene controls
