Case Study

Fish Processing Plant in the South West

Client: Fish Processing Plant, South West

Project Scope: Installation of a new drainage system and floor to resolve water pooling issues.

Issue:

The fish processing plant in the South West had been experiencing persistent water pooling in one area of the factory. This not only posed a significant safety hazard for workers but also threatened the hygiene standards essential for food processing environments. The client required a long-lasting solution to address the water pooling and ensure the area met stringent industry regulations.

Solution:

Surface Systems was tasked with resolving the issue by designing and installing a new drainage system and floor. The project was executed in several key stages:

1. Removal of Existing Floor:

The first step involved the removal of the existing floor in the affected area. This was necessary to prepare the site for the installation of the new drainage system. The old flooring was carefully dismantled, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations in other parts of the plant.

2. Installation of Stainless-Steel Drainage Channel:

With the area prepared, Surface Systems installed a custom-designed stainless-steel drainage channel. This channel was specifically engineered to handle the volume of water produced by the plant, ensuring that water would be efficiently directed away from the working area.

3. Laying of Polymer Modified Screed:

Following the drainage installation, a polymer-modified screed was laid to create a fall in the floor, ensuring water would naturally flow towards the new drainage channel. This work was carried out with precision, using laser levels forming the screed to achieve the required gradient.

4. Completion of Screed to Falls:

The screed was completed, with careful attention to creating consistent falls throughout the area. This step was crucial in preventing future water pooling and ensuring the longevity of the floor.

5. Preparation of Polymer Modified Screed:

Prior to the application of the final polyurethane flooring, the polymer modified screed was prepared by means of dust-extracted diamond grinding. This process created the requirements for the bond to be strong between the polymer modified screed and the damp proof epoxy primer.

6. Application of Polyurethane Floor:

The final stage involved the application of a polyurethane floor, chosen for its durability and resistance to chemicals and moisture. The floor was applied at a thickness of 9mm, providing a robust surface capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of a fish processing environment. The floor was finished in yellow, a colour chosen for its visibility and compliance with safety regulations.

Outcome:

The completed project effectively resolved the water pooling issue, creating a safer and more hygienic working environment. The new drainage system and polyurethane floor not only met the client’s expectations but also adhered to industry standards for food processing facilities. The project was delivered on time and within budget, ensuring minimal disruption to the plant’s operations.

Client Feedback:

The client expressed high satisfaction with the quality of the work and the professionalism of the Surface Systems team. The new flooring has significantly improved safety in the plant, and the drainage system has eliminated the recurring issue of water pooling.
