Waste Treatment Plant Floors

Waste treatment is a complicated process.  The plants may be processing food waste, chemical waste or acids among others.

Choosing the correct floor for your waste treatment plant can be challenging.  Protecting your concrete floor from these processes is essential.

Flooring should be a high performing polyurethane resin flooring or a high performing epoxy coating or screed, that is durable and abrasion-resistant, low odour and waterproof, corrosive and chemical resistant.  Your floor covering needs to protect your concrete first and foremost.  It should meet health and safety regulations and protect your employees and your facilities against waste.

What affects a concrete floor’s durability?

Chemicals.

Chemicals that are created throughout the waste treatment processes will eventually lower the pH of any concrete they come in contact with.  These attacks cause an expansion-contraction cycle which, together with the naturally occurring carbonisation, in time weakens the concrete.

Temperature fluctuations.

When concrete fluctuates between hot and cold, and wet and dry there will be inevitable tension on the concrete and these naturally occurring conditions create cracks over time.

What is the best flooring solution?

Waste treatment plants need a flooring solution that is constructed of durable materials that can cope with the challenges of chemical and environmental exposure.  Coating systems are designed to help protect concrete by providing a barrier to moisture infiltration and different chemicals.

Our team at Surface Systems advise using a polyurethane resin flooring or a high performing epoxy coating or screed.

What are heavy-duty polyurethane and epoxy screeds?

Heavy-duty polyurethane and epoxy screeds offer the highest level of durability to date.  They are generally laid between 6mm and 9mm and with an exception, up to 12mm.  They can have a life span of over 10 years even in the toughest of environments.  Recognised as one of the most hardwearing, robust screeds on the market, they are extremely resistant to aggressive chemicals and heavy impact and temperatures up to 120°c.

The range of high-quality products that we use at Surface Systems are specifically designed for use in areas such as waste treatment plants, they are fast-curing and offer the highest level of durability on the market.
