Slip Resistant Flooring

The potential for slips, trips, and falls in a workplace is high. These are commonly caused by obstructions in walkways and uneven surfaces.

Preventing these accidents can be as simple as choosing the correct flooring.

We understand that there is a need to decide on high-quality, durable, cost-effective, and safe products in such potentially high-traffic areas.

The performance of a floor can be severely affected by the use of large/heavy machinery, food production, and spillage of water/oils.

This can lead to an unsafe work environment with potentially slippery floors and even contamination of the flooring.

Here at Surface Systems, we have a number of products available to help ensure that your company is compliant with The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 regulations.

These include:

Epoxy Coatings

Epoxy Screed Flooring

Epoxy Self-Smoothening Floors

Polyurethane Screeds

However, when choosing your flooring there are a number of factors that need to be considered.

Tips at preventing slips and trips in the workplace

  • Walkways –

Ensure that you have suitable walkways – are they in the correct location? Are they being used/available for use?

Think about the tasks that are being conducted on the walkway e.g. is the task preventing the employee from seeing where they are going?

  • Good Housekeeping –

Walkways must be kept clear with no obstructions.

Adopt a ‘see it, sort it’ attitude to ensure the area is kept clear.

Ensure that there are plenty of bins, storage facilities, etc.

  • Design and Maintenance –

It is essential to use the correct type of slip-resistant flooring, such as slip-resistant epoxy resin flooring. It is also vital that this is fitted correctly and is properly maintained.

Think about the design of the walkways. Are they wide enough? Is the flooring level?

Real Life Flooring Solution

We have completed over forty-five projects with the Fire and Rescue Services since 2004. In this organisation the health and safety of the fire personnel were paramount as they would be rushing about before and after fire shouts.

Therefore, the level of slip resistance in their flooring took precedence due to it usually being wet and spillages were a constant on-site.

After consultation with the client, we ended up applying a resin coating system with a fine slip-resistant surface.
